Ingredients you Need

Well, as it is Shepherd’s Pie, it will need a good amount of ingredients. Some of them will already be available at home, while you can get some from the market.

  • You will need 2 pounds of potatoes, and some butter might be available at your home.
  • Then salt, pepper, milk, extra virgin olive oil, and a few sections of onion, carrots, and garlic.
  • Here comes the all-in-one: you will need meat, and it is best to get some ground beef.
  • For spices, thyme and rosemary are ideal.
  • Moreover, a little flour and tomato paste, as well as some beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, corn, and peas, will give you everything you need to make the Shepherd’s Pie recipe.
  • potatoes (2 pounds peeled and cut into chunks)
  • butter, melted (2 tablespoons)
  • salt (1 ½ teaspoon divided)
  • pepper, divided (¾ teaspoon)
  • Milk (¼ cup)
  • extra virgin olive oil (1 tablespoon)
  • Onion, (1 small diced)
  • carrots (2 diced)
  • cloves garlic, (2 minced)
  • ground beef (1 pound)
  • dried thyme (1 teaspoon)
  • dried rosemary (1 teaspoon)
  • Flour (2 tablespoons)
  • tomato paste (2 teaspoons)
  • chicken or beef broth (⅔ cup)
  • Worcestershire sauce (1 teaspoon)
  • frozen corn (½ cup)
  • frozen peas (½ cup)

Direction:

Step 1: Starting with Potatoes

Starting with Potatoes

First up, get a stockpot and add some diced potatoes, which should be around 1-1.5 inches thick. Add water to it, and then turn on the heat to full. When the water starts to boil and bubbles start to form, lower the heat and cook for 15 minutes. Once you know the potatoes are soft, remove them from the stove, and you can strain any remaining moisture and water through a colander.

Step 2: Mashed Potatoes

Mashed Potatoes

Grab a bowl and add potatoes, including melted butter and ½ teaspoon of salt. Afterwards, add some pepper and milk. You can use a hand mixer as well as anything else for mixing, though make sure it is mixed well. Potato mashed would be best for it. Once mixing is done, preheat the oven to 400 F.

Step 3: Saute the onion, carrots, and beef.

Saute the onion, carrots, and beef.

For this step, you need a skillet, and then drizzle it in the olive oil. Now place it on a medium skillet and add chopped onions and carrots. You can cook the veggies for about 4 minutes. Afterwards, you can add garlic and cook for another minute. Here comes the ground beef. Add it to the skillet and break up the meat; you can use a wooden spoon for that. Start searing meat with ½ teaspoon of salt and ½ teaspoon of pepper. Once you know the beef is no longer pink, you can stop cooking it.

Step 4: Simmering the mixture

Before simmering, you need to add tomato paste broth and Worcestershire sauce to the mixture of meat and veggies. Afterwards, heat it to a boil and then lower the heat. Cover the skillet with a lid and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.

Step 5: Adding corn and peas

Adding corn and peas

It’s time to add corn and peas. After 10 minutes of simmering, transfer the beef and vegetable mixture to a baking dish. Make sure to place the mashed potatoes on top of the ground beef and make an even and smooth layer of potatoes above the ground meat and vegetables.

Step 6: Bake and serve

Bake and serve

All you need to do is add the pie to the oven and bake it for 25–30 minutes. Cooking time can vary based on your range. You can continue cooking until you see the edges of the potatoes are brown.

Once you know it is ready, slowly remove the shepherd’s pie from the oven and serve as you like best.
