Perhaps the greatest dish to start with if you’ve ever wanted a really fascinating course in food history is with chicken katsu. Fried chicken cutlet coated in panko bread crumbs is known as chicken katsu, or chicken katsu in Japan. The Japanese word “katsuretto,” which means “cutlet” in English, is simplified to “katsu.”

The introduction of French côtolette du veal gave rise to the popularity of katsu, more especially tonkotsu or pork cutlets, in Japan. Because the French veal cutlets were breaded and deep-fried in butter that were replaced by less expensive pork chops coated in panko and deep-fried, as they better suit the Japanese cooking style.

These light, crispy, and crunchy cutlets quickly rose to prominence in Japan cuisine, showing up in ramen, curries and between the slices of bread for a delicious baked chicken katsu sandwich recipe.
